Protection and security

The aim of protection and safety work is to ensure the safety of people and society in different ways. The police are responsible for maintaining public order and security and for preventing crime. The criminal sanctions sector is responsible for enforcing imprisonment and community sanctions. The task of the fire and rescue services is to prevent fires and other accidents as well as to carry out rescue operations in cases of accidents and civil defence tasks in emergency conditions. The Finnish Defence Forces are responsible for the surveillance and safeguarding of the territorial integrity and for defending the country. Companies in the safety and security sector provide a multitude of services to protect clients’ property or integrity.
