Koto database
The Koto database is an open, register-based statistical database that provides you with extensive information on the population with immigrant background in Finland.
The Koto database is administered by the KEHA Centre. Statistics Finland is responsible for its maintenance in accordance with the instructions of the KEHA Centre.
The Koto database is easy to use. You can personalise and produce the statistics you need in your work.
How to use the database
- First, select the table for your desired topic from the list.
- Next, select the variables you want. You should also select the area level and any other information. If the table contains variables marked with an asterisk, at least one of these variables must be selected.
- Finally, you can format the order of table rows and columns more easily, save a completed table in Excel format or select built-in statistical graphs. You will be able to view the details of the variables on the Tietoja taulukosta tab.
Use statistics carefully
It is a good idea to exercise caution when using statistical data and concepts. For example, there is no single established definition for immigrants. Depending on the context, it can mean an analysis of foreign citizens or the foreign-born population. It is also difficult to draw general conclusions from statistics produced on the basis of small samples. For example, when the number of immigrants doubles in a small locale, this may only involve an increase of a few people.
Always take context into account when interpreting statistics.
