This is how Janne was recruited, and this is how his replacement was hired

Once upon a time – or, to be exact, four years ago – there was a small company in an acute need of an employee. During the summer holidays, one of the key persons had unexpectedly announced that they would change jobs, and the busiest time of the year was about to begin.

As there was no time or resources for the traditional recruitment process, the employer searched for the fastest way to hire a new employee. On the te-palvelut.fi website, the employer came across a CV-netti service where jobseekers could submit an anonymous presentation of themselves and employers could search for an employee using appropriate search terms.

In principle, the search was straightforward, but suddenly the exact search word and its limitations became a problem: sometimes the results included information about people not even remotely connected to the field, and sometimes, nothing came up at all. After trial and error, followed by reading dozens of files detailing information on training and work experience, the employer came up with a sufficiently limiting keyword that highlighted exactly the right kind of jobseekers (for the curious ones amongst you, the word was “a tractor”).

Fast recruitment the old way

The employer had to decide whether to place emphasis on education, competence or work experience. Janne's CV best fulfilled the employer's wishes regarding the employee’s competence. The CV was minimal, but it included all the information necessary for completing the task.

Janne did not promise to be chirpy or to provide an energising boost for the work community, but instead, he listed all the tasks which he considered to come most naturally to him. At this stage, the employer did not know that the applicant was Janne because the CV was anonymous. Janne’s identity was only revealed after the employer had sent him an e-mail through the service, and Janne had responded to it.

The employer explained the situation in the e-mail message: there was an open position, and someone was required to start immediately. Janne replied the same day, the employer immediately called him and invited him for an interview, the meeting was scheduled for the following day, and the employment relationship began three days later on Monday.

Both sides were on their toes a little, because Janne was a recent graduate, and this was his first real job involving moving away from familiar circles, adapting to a work community consisting of middle-aged people and learning a lot of new information. They agreed to wait and see how it all went for three months. This was recorded as a trial period in the employment contract.

From an important link in the work community to the world of Duplo Legos

Over the past four years, Janne has become an important link in his work community. The employer did not look for an active and enthusiastic personality suited for teamwork, and who would also be flexible in many ways and capable of independent work while also having the ability to see the big picture in great detail and enjoying work in a hectic environment. The employer was looking for a reliable worker who would understand what was being done, how and why – and Janne proved to be exactly the right person for the position.

Yesterday Janne said he would take family leave in March. It is the father's turn to stay at home and build Duplo Lego castles with the family’s first child born in May.

The search for Janne’s replacement will take place in a new way

Today, employers no longer visit the CV-netti service, as it does not exist anymore. Instead, they open Job Market Finland and draw up a job posting for a one-year position. It is possible to search for suitable candidates immediately by browsing the employee recommendations: you do not necessarily need to publish a posting. Somewhere in the background, artificial intelligence makes comparisons between the text in the job posting and the job search profiles of potential jobseekers, looking for compatibility, or, in digital language, a match. You can also use search words if you feel like it, but the current service works more efficiently than the ancient CV- netti service.

It is impossible to find another Janne on the Job Market, but hopefully there is a Leevi or a Laura equipped with the same attitude, who is eager to learn, has competence, and is ready to complete the job. This time, there is no need to start next Monday, but preferably already at the beginning of February. Janne has promised to take care of the orientation.
