Spring's barometer 2026 for small and medium-sized enterproses has been published

The business outlook of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) has remained largely unchanged since last autumn and is now at the same level as a year ago.

However, the operating environment for companies continues to be burdened by U.S. tariff decisions, tightening international political tensions, and the ongoing war of aggression by Russia. The situation is particularly challenging in the construction and retail sectors.

At the end of the year, payment difficulties among SMEs declined significantly, especially among younger companies. Nevertheless, access to financing remains a challenge.

Investment plans continue to be cautious. Across all main industries, more companies are reducing investments than increasing them.

Growth ambitions, which have been declining for a long time, have now shown a slight uptick. More than two in five SMEs report that they are either strongly growth-oriented or seeking growth when opportunities arise. Despite this improvement, the overall level remains below the long-term average.

At the same time, digitalization is progressing rapidly. Nearly half of SMEs consider the adoption of artificial intelligence to be relevant either now or within the next year, compared to only about one-third last year.
