2022 a record year for recruiting labour

In 2022, employment increased by approximately 64,000 people compared to 2021. During 2022, workplaces were looking to employ more than 655,000 new people, which was more than 91,000 more than the previous year. However, there was a clear increase in problems related to the availability of labour at the same time: there was a shortage 81,500 people in the labour market. Employers looked to employ a total of more than 295,000 people for new jobs. Taking into account the impact of labour shortages, some 258,000 new jobs were created in Finland.

In 2022, new jobs were created especially by companies and other private sector operators. The smallest number of new jobs were created in municipalities. In relative terms, the largest number of new jobs were created in Southeast Finland, North Karelia, South Savo, Uusimaa and Southwest Finland.

In relative terms, the largest number of new jobs were created in construction, information and communications, and in professional scientific and technical activities. Overall, the largest number of new labour was sought in health and social services, trade, education and industry.

In 2022, the factors affecting the creation of new jobs were mainly similar to those in previous years. The most important factors affecting the creation of new jobs were the business sector, a place of business that employs at least 50 people, the expectation of an increase in the number of personnel, the fluctuation in the number of personnel at least 10%, the foreign workforce at the workplace and the hiring of an unemployed person, a recent graduate or student/schoolchildren, and looking to employ at least two permanent new employees.
