Platform work is becoming more common and changing the nature of work
Digital platforms change society and the nature of work. Platform work means receiving work tasks via a digital platform. In a platform economy, everyone can make their time or skills available to others either free of charge or for a price.
A digital platform is a virtual place on the Internet, on which people that need services or products can meet people that offer the same. Platform work is often short-term or gig-type work and can be carried out either locally or remotely. For example, cleaning or graphic design can be carried out as platform work.
Platform work is not yet very common in Finland, but abroad, it is growing rapidly. Platform work and its related concepts are an unestablished theme, and it also requires regulation.
Digital platforms are largely based on algorithms. Algorithms are a set of rules according to which digital services select what content is displayed or recommended to their users. This set of rules consists of information collected of a user's interests after monitoring their activity on the platform.
