Have you been applying for summer jobs since the beginning of the year, but despite being active, still haven’t found a job? Not to worry. There are many options for what you can do during the summer!

1) Try applying for open summer jobs or seasonal work one more time.
Job Market Finland currently has 883 summer jobs and 87 seasonal jobs open for applications. Open positions include cooks, waitresses, builders, sales persons, and sales representatives for the summer festivals, berry stands, marketplace stands and kiosks, and cleaners, and planting work.
2) Look for a summer job in any and all places.
Use word of mouth and tell people openly that you are looking for a summer job. Put the word forward among your friends, family acquaintances and relatives. Share on social media that you are looking for a job. You can either write a post about your situation or film a free-form job search video. Have you created a profile in LinkedIn already? There are also different regional groups on Facebook where you can share that you are looking for a summer job if it is allowed by the rules of the group.
Many companies may need workforce for various assistive tasks during the summer even if they do not post them as vacancies. So you should send an open application or call or visit a company that you are interested in. Take a moment beforehand to think about how you will introduce yourself and your interest in the company.
3) Create your own job.
If, despite all your efforts, you cannot find a job or a place that is suitable, you can create a job for yourself for the summer with light entrepreneurship. It means that you will work like an entrepreneur but won’t have a company or business ID. There are many invoicing services that you can use for invoicing.
Light entrepreneurship is well suited for selling services. Suitable tasks for people working as light entrepreneurs include various home and yard maintenance tasks, such as cutting grass or painting houses. You can offer small businesses help with marketing and take pictures, make videos, write texts or help with social media. You could also babysit your neighbour’s children or walk a friend’s dog.
4) Volunteer.
Sometimes it is hard to find a job because you have no experience. Volunteering is an excellent low-threshold way to develop new skills. Organisations and associations are happy to get help, and you can also volunteer at various events and festivals in the summer. Volunteering can teach you a variety of skills, such as customer service, communication, or working with different people. Volunteering is also work you can add in your résumé.
5) Develop your skills.
Instead of doing paid work or volunteering, you can complete various skills passports and skills cards during the summer, such as the Hygiene Passport, a security steward licence, a licence to serve alcoholic beverages, or the Occupational Safety Card, or you can take different courses, for example at an adult education centre or open university. Any skills you can accumulate will benefit you and increase your chances of finding work in the future.

Also remember to rest and enjoy the summer by doing something you like. You can always improve your job search skills and personal competence, but it is also very important to take care of yourself.
