How have you ended up in the profession of your choice?
I ended up in this profession through a friend of mine working in a pest control company. They asked me to help, and that is the path I’m still following.
Describe your typical working day or week.
My typical working day includes agreeing on appointments with customers and pest control at various sites. If the day includes pest control indoors, I spray pesticides and apply gels. If it is a rodent problem, I mainly use bait toxins. Part of the day is spent driving from one site to another.
What kind of work environment or working hours do you have?
I do daytime work, mainly in apartments and in real estate yards.
What kind of competence or qualities are required in the profession?
The most important thing in pest control is to manage the safe use of pesticides. Carefulness and some customer service skills are also needed.
What is the best thing about your profession?
The best part of my job is variability. Usually customers are happy when they get help with the pest problem that has affected them.
What are the downsides of the profession or what seems challenging?
Preventing bedbugs tends to be challenging, especially when the apartment is full of stuff. In such situations, prevention requires special care and may take more time than usual.
What would you tell a person considering the profession of a pest controller?
The work of a pest controller is quite pleasant and varied, as there are new sites every week.
How do you see the future of your profession?
I believe there is plenty of work available also in the future, because pests won’t disappear from the world. Climate change and people’s travels only increase their number.
