Doctoral researcher
Doctoral researchers carry out research at universities and higher education institutions and teach. Usually, they are postgraduate students completing a scientific postgraduate degree. Doctoral researchers also teach, for example subjects related to their own research topic, because the university's employment relationship usually includes a teaching obligation. The term university teacher is also used for the same task, in which case the share of teaching work is emphasised in the profession. The work requires mastery of one's own field of study, teaching skills, as well as the ability to engage in independent scientific work and group work.

Väitöskirjatutkijalta edellytetään oman oppialansa teoreettista hallintaa. Ammatissa tarvitaan opetustaitoja. Väitöskirjatutkijan on tunnettava yliopiston tai korkeakoulun hallinto riittävän hyvin.
Ammatissa tarvitaan kykyä itsenäiseen työskentelyyn, mutta myös vuorovaikutus- ja ryhmätyötaitoja. Tutkimustyötä tehtäessä tarvitaan mm. analyyttistä ajattelua.

Väitöskirjatutkijan toimeen vaaditaan soveltuva ylempi korkeakoulututkinto yliopistosta. Tällaisia ovat esimerkiksi filosofian maisteri, kasvatustieteen maisteri, kauppatieteiden maisteri, yhteiskuntatieteiden maisteri, taiteen maisteri, musiikin maisteri, lääketieteen lisensiaatti ja diplomi-insinööri.
Soveltuva ylempi korkeakoulututkinto tai vastaava ulkomailla suoritettu tutkinto.
