In the profession of a family day care provider, responsibility, good interpersonal skills, creativity and perseverance are required. A family day care provider needs competence in child-rearing, early childhood education, safety and health care. They must be able to recognise children’s needs, guide and support children’s development, and cooperate with parents and other childcare professionals.

Skills in music, language and visual expression are an advantage in guiding a group of children. A family day care provider plans and implements the child’s daily routines, such as meals, play, outdoor activities and rest, so the work requires organisational skills. In addition, they must be able to support the child’s development and learning, for example in the areas of language, motor skills and social relationships.

A Further Vocational Qualification in Education and Guidance with a competence area in family day care is recommended for the tasks of a family day care provider. The qualification can also be completed through an apprenticeship. Municipalities, vocational adult education centres and other educational institutions provide training for family day care providers. A Vocational Qualification in Social and Health Care, practical nurse, is also a suitable qualification for the work of a family day care provider.
