A rail yard worker is responsible for shunting work in rail yards, i.e. assembling trains and groups of railcars using a radio-controlled locomotive. They assemble trains and railcar groups from individual railcars and deliver to customers, ports and factories. Most work for VR Group. Rail yard work requires good physical condition and health. Teamwork skills, responsibility, attention and taking care of occupational safety are important in the profession.

In rail yard work, you need to have a good physical condition, as you may need to walk several kilometres during the working day, to lift and to board and climb out of railcars several times a day.

It is important to know how to take care of occupational safety at the rail yard. You need to be responsible, attentive and diligent. In addition to teamwork skills, you need to have communication and interaction skills.

You need to be prepared for shift work. Working in the profession requires good health, excellent colour vision and good hearing.

The training is organised by Kouvola Railway and Adult Education Company (KRAO). The training lasts approximately five months and is full-time.
