Air traffic controllers are required to have knowledge of air traffic control, information technology, radar and communication equipment. The profession requires good three-dimensional perception, accuracy, concentration and the ability to multi-task. Safety must be taken into account at all times.

The profession requires responsibility, a willingness to serve and the ability to take into account economic considerations, such as cost-effectiveness. You will also need to be able to cooperate, problem-solve and cope well with stress.

An air traffic controller must have a good command of Finnish and English and be in good health.

The training leading to the profession of air traffic controller takes place at Avia College. Basic air traffic control training takes about one and a half years.

The profession requires an air traffic controller's licence issued by the Finnish Transport Safety Agency. Applicants must also have passed the matriculation examination or gained an upper secondary school leaving certificate or a basic vocational qualification, have good Finnish and English language skills and a good state of health in accordance with the requirements for air traffic controller qualification (EU No. 2015/340).
