You must be familiar with energy technology, which is a combination of mechanical, automation and electrical engineering. You must continuously monitor technological developments, as the systems are constantly evolving. Various equipment and spare parts purchases require commercial expertise.

You need organisational skills and the ability to work independently and in groups. You will often work in a supervisory position, so HR management skills are an essential part of the work. In challenging repair and maintenance situations, you often need problem-solving capabilities.

Technical skills and language skills are also needed in the profession. In the wind power sector, for example, the working language is almost without exception English.

In this sector, the ability to work at high altitudes is vital.

You can study energy and environmental technology, electrical and automation technology and battery technology at a university of applied sciences. The qualification title is Engineer. In addition, the university of applied sciences offers a master’s degree in decentralised energy production (Engineer). You can also progress through vocational training if you have the experience and skills to do the job. You can complete a Vocational Qualification in Electrical Engineering and Automation Engineering and a Further Qualification, for example.

You can study energy technology in the technical universities. The master’s degree is a Master of Science (Technology). The related bachelor's degree is a Bachelor of Science (Technology). You can also study mechanical engineering, automation technology, electrical engineering and electronics in technical sciences.

According to the regulations in the electrical safety sector, only persons with sufficient professional skills may carry out electrical and operational work in their own field independently. The person in charge of the electrical safety sector (head of electrical work or head of operation) must have a certificate of competence covering the area of operation. The certificate of competency is issued to a person with adequate electrical training, work experience and a completed electrical safety degree.
