The laboratory technician is able to perform chemical, physical, biochemical, microbiological and sensory analyses and process various samples. The laboratory technician is also able to select the right chemicals and equipment for their work, as well as use and maintain them following instructions.

The professional must comply with the work, operating and safety instructions, and work in accordance with the quality and environmental systems of the laboratory, and in a profit-oriented manner. The laboratory technician utilises information technology in their work and is able to assess the reliability of the results and their own performance. Laboratory technicians are able to develop their professional skills and work performances, with the help of good basic knowledge of mathematics and natural sciences.

The work requires precision and care, a long-term approach, as well as an ability to work both independently and in a team. Customer service requires a service-minded approach. Finger dexterity is an advantage in the handling of instruments. Language skills are also needed.

A tendency to allergies, asthma and colour blindness may be an obstacle to working in the profession.

In upper secondary vocational institutions, you can complete the Vocational Qualification in Laboratory Technology. The qualification title is Laboratory Technician. It is also possible to complete a vocational qualification through an apprenticeship. 

At universities of applied sciences, you can complete a Bachelor of Laboratory Services degree.
