The restaurant manager is a management position that requires solid experience in the restaurant sector as well as organisational skills and a customer service spirit. Restaurant work is collaborative, so cooperation and interaction skills are needed.

The profession requires economic thinking and knowledge of legislation and regulations in the field. Other features that help work run smoothly include a systematic approach, independent thinking and the ability to express oneself clearly both in writing and orally.

Knowledge of hygienic working methods is essential. Information technology skills are needed in office work. The restaurant manager must continuously monitor what is happening in the sector and in the availability of raw ingredients. 

Food and detergent allergies may be a disadvantage in the work.

 

You can complete a Bachelor of Hospitality Management degree in tourism and catering at a university of applied sciences.  You can also become a restaurant manager through career development. The starting point may be, for example, a basic education in the restaurants and catering sector. Competence and vocational skills are accumulated through practical work experience and continuing education. 

Once you have accumulated more competence, you can also study a further vocational qualification in customer service at a restaurant, a specialist vocational qualification in supervisory work in the accommodation and catering sector, and a specialist vocational qualification in management and business management.

Persons who in their work handle unpackaged and perishable foods in a food space must confirm their hygiene proficiency with a Hygiene Passport. Hygiene Passport Tests are arranged by Hygiene Passport Examiners approved by the Finnish Food Safety Authority (Evira), which operate independently and issue Hygiene Passports.

Licence to serve alcoholic beverages is a certificate proving that the person has sufficient knowledge of alcohol legislation. This is needed in order to be able to act as the manager of licensed facilities with a C-license (a bartender).
