Meri-Lappi employment area has export potential, industry and growing tourism
- News
The network built around large-scale industry, the growing tourism sector, and the special features of the border region make the Meri-Lappi employment area unique.
The Meri-Lappi employment area is diverse and dynamic. It is home to many forestry, transport, and metal companies, the growth of tourism has increased international interest, and there is a high demand for workers. Proximity to the Swedish border brings its own added value, and cross-border trade and business are a key part of the region's vitality.
"Meri-Lappi is the heart of Finnish large-scale industry. Industry is the backbone of the region, while tourism is also on the rise. There's a strong upturn in tourism especially in Ylitornio, and the region attracts visitors from many countries, such as France," says Samuel Juntunen, Employment Director at the Meri-Lappi employment area.
Skilled workers are needed in various fields
According to Juntunen, there are relatively few open jobs in the area, and some employers are cautious about publishing job adverts. To better identify hidden jobs and employer needs, the work of business specialists and business visits have been increased.
"While only about 1.2 per cent of the Finnish population live in the area, it makes up for roughly 8 per cent of Finland's exports. This reflects a strong industrial structure and the international significance of the region," Juntunen says.
Meri-Lappi's employment rate is lower than the national average but slightly higher than the average in Lapland. Differences between municipalities affect the resource allocation for services, and competence needs vary between industry, logistics, service sectors, and tourism.
"One sector cannot be highlighted over the others, as skilled workers are needed across the board," Juntunen adds.
Active use of services by employers
Out of the employment services available, the nomination of applicants by specialists and job posting services are the most common among employers. Job coaching and joint purchase training are also utilised.
"The number of joint purchase training could be increased going forward. The 'mini recruitment' events have received excellent feedback as targeted and effective recruitment sessions," says Juntunen.
The service processes are working, and Meri-Lappi has up-to-date service plans and high activation rates for the unemployed. The region has been able to provide a personal and high-quality service, despite its limited financial resources. Low-threshold services, such as One-Stop Guidance Centers and Pointti, have received praise.
"Overall, the Meri-Lappi employment area is doing well. We have a strong foundation, but the age structure and availability of skilled labour will be key challenges for the future," Juntunen sums up.
