A goldsmith mainly makes jewellery from precious metals or stones. Their work involves design, manufacturing, repairs and sales. The profession requires craftmanship and artistic and customer service skills. Goldsmiths are self-employed or work in companies that make precious metal products or in wholesale or retail.

Goldsmiths require craftmanship, creativity and precision. They also need finger dexterity, as the objects handled are often very small. Precision calls for patience and good concentration skills.

Goldsmiths also require good regular and colour vision. Handling valuable materials requires care, reliability and honesty. Customer service skills are a necessity.

Goldsmiths can specialise in 3D modelling and printing, for example, which also requires IT skills. A self-employed goldsmith also needs business skills.

The profession is not suitable for anyone who is allergic to chemicals or metals.

To become a goldsmith, a basic degree in arts and design (artisan, precious metals) needs to be completed. 

Once a goldsmith has gained more experience, they can also complete a vocational degree in arts and design (goldsmith) or a special vocational degree (senior goldsmith). 

The degree can also be completed through apprenticeship training. 

A designer’s degree (bachelor’s degree) in culture and arts, including jewellery design in studies, can be completed at universities of applied sciences.

Provisions on the manufacture and trade of precious metal products are laid down in an act in Finland. Precious metal products for sale must have a concentration stamp and the registered name stamp of the operator or the inspection stamp of an inspection body. Finnish Safety and Chemicals Agency (TUKES) grants the manufacturer a name stamp.
