The responsible job of a helicopter pilot requires not only flying skills but also good mental and physical fitness, the ability to make independent decisions, good judgement and calmness. The job requirements are based on aviation regulations and any additional requirements set by the employer.

The job also requires a good ability to cope with pressure, logical thinking, accuracy and cooperation skills. You must also be in good health as certified by a medical examination.

Helicopter pilots are trained in private flight schools. Flying is based on training and different levels of licences. The first step is to obtain a private pilot's licence, after which you can train to become a professional pilot. For example, specialising in HEMS (Helicopter Emergency Medical Service) requires work experience and further training in helicopter rescue. Training costs at private flight schools are high.

The Finnish Border Guard and Finnish Defence Forces train personnel for their respective tasks. To be eligible for these jobs, you must have taken the Air Reserve Officer course. The requirements for training are relatively strict.
