Stevedores have a lot of responsibility because they have to place cargo in a vessel’s hold and deck in a way that it stays put even in rough seas. The work requires precision and care so that as much cargo as possible can be loaded safely onto a vessel. Drivers of large and heavy machinery are also required to stay alert, as there is always a possibility of an accident in stevedoring work.

Stevedoring is teamwork, especially when loading cargo into ships, so it requires teamwork skills. Stevedores working in customer service are required to be service-minded and have language skills.

The profession requires adapting to shift work, tight schedules and constantly changing workstations and working conditions. The work also requires sufficient physical fitness.

Stevedores are trained on the job by employers, and the way to a permanent employment relationship often opens up through temporary assignments. Apprenticeship training has also been organised.

When you have accumulated some skill, you can complete a Vocational Qualification in Stowage and a Specialist Vocational Qualification in Stowage in the competence area of cargo handling.
