Briefly explain what you do for a living.

I am a graphic designer with a focus on creating a visual brand identity. Visual identity is a system of elements, such as a logo, colours, typography, and other visual means that reflect the brand's mindset and make it unique and stand out. At the moment, I work as a freelance designer, but I am currently looking for a full-time job.

How have you ended up in the profession of your choice?

I liked drawing and crafts when I was a kid. Later, my interests expanded from drawing to all kinds of creative activities. I studied at an art school, but I was more interested in the creative process of ideation than in the technique of drawing. In general, upper secondary school, I became sure of my decision to become a graphic designer.

Describe your typical working day or week.

Since I work as a freelancer, I plan my own schedule. Usually, I start my work day by opening Pinterest, where I look at the latest posts. After this, I take care of routine tasks, such as invoicing and responding to emails. If I have a task that requires creativity, such as ideation or creating a visual identity, I allow myself more freedom. For example, I may go to the swimming pool or library, as long as I keep my thoughts on the job. My working day also includes communication with customers and colleagues.

What kind of work environment or working hours do you work in?

I work from home. My working hours are very flexible as I work as a freelancer.

What kind of competence or qualities are required in the profession?

The profession of graphic designer requires diverse expertise. Creativity alone is not enough, as the work involves scheduling, assessing workloads, and interacting with customers and colleagues. A good graphic designer can think critically, is analytical, committed, and enthusiastic, and dares to take responsibility.

What is the best thing about your profession?

It is inspiring that visual communication can help find solutions to problems and change the environment. Visual design can make the surroundings more functional, pleasant, and aesthetic. Visual language can also be used to deliver various messages and inspire emotions.

What are the downsides of the profession or what seems challenging?

Graphic designers face different challenges depending on the stage of their career. At the moment, my personal challenges are related to a new language and culture, as I moved from Russia to Finland four months ago. However, I welcome these challenges and believe that new opportunities will open up to me in my new home country in the future.

What would you tell a person considering the profession of a graphic designer?

If you decide to become a graphic designer, your work will never be boring. There is always something new to learn, as the world and tools of graphic design are changing rapidly. If you fail, you can always change the direction of your career.

How do you see the future of your profession?

Artificial intelligence will change graphic design in the future. I believe that artificial intelligence will be able to do many things for us, and it will be up to us to focus on what only human intelligence can do, that is, being creative.
