A train conductor is responsible for the comfort and safety of passengers on both commuter and long-distance trains. They advise customers and sell and inspect tickets. At the stations, they are responsible for ensuring that passengers can board and leave the train safely. The position is a customer service profession that requires good interaction skills and language skills. Self-initiative and calmness are beneficial, as train conductors sometimes have to intervene in disturbances in public order in their work, for example.

In Finland, the train conductor’s employer is VR.

The profession requires customer service spirit and a willingness to work with people. Good stress tolerance may sometimes be necessary. You expected to be responsible, as the work involves dealing with the safety of passengers. You also need self-initiative and the ability to make independent decisions, especially when something exceptional happens.

You must master the basics of first aid. You need to have good Finnish skills and the ability to cope flexibly in customer service situations also in English and Swedish. Other language skills are an advantage.

You must adapt to irregular working hours. Working days mean continuous mobility and working standing on feet on a moving train, so it helps to be in good basic condition. You need good general health, especially good hearing, vision and colour vision in the profession.

Train conductors are trained by the employer. For example, VR's long-distance conductor training lasting about seven weeks takes the form of multiform online training, contact teaching and on-the-job learning. The training for commuter train conductors is implemented as online training and an on-the-job learning period.
