The professional competence of a cosmetologist is based on knowledge of hygiene, human anatomy and physiology, as well as know-how in the ingredients of cosmetics and skin care methods. In addition, cosmetologists guide customers in finding their own style.

Interaction skills play a key role in the profession, and empathy is useful in customer encounters. In addition to treatment and product competence, forming an individual care plan requires the ability to listen to the customer's needs. Manual skills are emphasised in the work of a cosmetologist, and precision and steady hands are an advantage in many work stages.

The profession of cosmetologist also requires marketing and sales skills because cosmetologists sell not only their own services but also products and equipment related to beauty care. The sector is constantly evolving, so cosmetologists must maintain their professional skills by training and actively seeking new information.
