Software testers must master both manual and automated testing methods and understand the life cycle of software development. Software testers must be able to use different test tools and be familiar with the testing phases, such as unit, integration and performance testing. Programming skills, especially the command of scripting languages, are useful in developing test automation.

In addition, software testers are required to be precise and to have problem-solving and analytical thinking skills. As testers usually work as a part of a team, good communication and cooperation skills are essential in reporting and working with developers. Knowledge of the basics of information security, usability testing and agile development methods, such as Scrum or DevOps, is also important in software development.

At universities of applied sciences, you can complete a bachelor of business administration degree in data processing. Universities of applied sciences also offer bachelor of engineering degrees with specialisation in fields such as information technology.

In the field of science at universities, you can study computer science and information technology and complete a master of arts degree or a bachelor of science degree. Faculties of technology provide education in technology, in which case the master's degree is a master of science (technology) and the bachelor's degree is a bachelor of science (technology). The studies may focus on, for example, information technology and telecommunications technology.
