An e-commerce employee must be familiar with the products and product groups sold on their online store, as well as the how the store itself is run at a technical level. The profession emphasises customer service and problem-solving skills and having initiative. Managing orders and the store’s inventory requires a systematic and accurate approach and good concentration skills. Packing orders also requires nimble fingers.

E-commerce employees should have a good understanding of various e-commerce platforms and payment systems. They also often need a good command of digital marketing and advertising. In sales promotion work, the ability to analyse the placement of products and the functionality of one’s online store is vital.

It is important to maintain a schedule in e-commerce work, but you must also be flexible and able to change your approach in any unexpected situations. The profession requires a willingness to continuously develop your competence. It may also require a good level of physical fitness if the work involves lifting and carrying heavy items.

At the upper secondary level, you can complete a Vocational Qualification in Business Administration. Once you have gained more experience, you can also complete a Further Vocational Qualification in Business (sales and marketing communications) and a Specialist Vocational Qualification in Business (trade; sales and marketing communications). You can also complete these qualifications through an apprenticeship.  

At a university of applied sciences, you can complete a Bachelor of Business Administration degree, after which you can complete a Master’s degree in digital marketing.
