Management skills play a key role, as the property maintenance supervisor is responsible for guiding employees, drawing up schedules and managing resources. The professional must be able to organise work tasks efficiently, monitor the progress of the work and ensure that the work is carried out in a high-quality and timely manner. They must also know how to cooperate with various stakeholders, such as subcontractors, customers and authorities. 

Project management skills are also important, as the property maintenance supervisor is often responsible for several simultaneous projects. Communication skills are emphasised because the property maintenance supervisor acts as a link between many different parties. They must be able to communicate clearly and consistently. 

The property maintenance supervisor must be familiar with safety regulations.

You may complete a vocational qualification in cleaning and property services (property maintenance operative) in occupational upper secondary education and training institutions.  When you have accumulated competence, you can complete a further qualification in cleaning and property services and a specialist vocational qualification. The qualification can also be completed through an apprenticeship. The vocational qualifications in construction, building maintenance technology, electrical engineering and automation technology and mechanical engineering and production technology also provide a foundation for installation, regulation and maintenance tasks. 

You can complete a bachelor of science (technology) degree by studying, for example, building maintenance technology or construction technology at a university of applied science.

According to the regulations in the electrical safety sector, only persons with sufficient professional skills may carry out electrical and operational work in their own field independently. The person in charge of the electrical safety sector (head of electrical work or head of operation) must have a certificate of competence covering the area of operation. The certificate of competency is issued to a person with adequate electrical training, work experience and a completed electrical safety degree.
