The work of a rehabilitation counsellor requires sufficient information on the client's illness and its physical, psychological and social impact on the rehabilitee's everyday life. For example, the profession requires extensive understanding of mobility, strength, balance and coordination exercises. Problem-solving skills are required, as the task of the rehabilitation counsellor is to help the client adapt to the illness or disability and find ways to live with it. It is also important to be able to motivate the customer to engage in independent physical activity and initiative.
If necessary, the rehabilitation counsellor directs patients to further treatment or other support services, so knowledge of social and health care structures and support systems is also needed in the profession. The work requires a comprehensive vision and an ability to think analytically.

At the university of applied sciences, you can acquire a bachelor's degree in social and health care. The degree title is rehabilitation counselor.
The profession of a rehabilitation counsellor is a licensed profession in Finland. Only licensed professionals are allowed to practice the profession in question. Upon application, Valvira grants licensing to practice the profession in question to social welfare professionals trained in Finland and abroad, and, once granted, enters the right to practise the profession in the central register for social welfare professionals.
