A textile designer works as an artist, artisan or designer of industrially produced textiles. They create and produce unique art textiles or design woven, knitted or printed fabrics for clothing and interior textiles. The profession requires visual insight, creativity and manual skills.
Textile designers work as entrepreneurs, in the textile industry, in educational institutions and in textile retail stores.
A strong visual sense is a fundamental requirement for this profession, including a good understanding of form, color and their relationships. The job demands creativity and design expertise, along with strong manual skills.
Collaboration skills and initiative are important in this field. In industrial design, commercial awareness, innovation, foresight and knowledge of industrial production methods are essential. For artists, in addition to craftsmanship and material knowledge, artistic vision and a desire for creative expression are required.
Self-employed artisans, artists, and freelance designers must have entrepreneurial skills. Proficiency in information technology is also necessary.
At the university level, students can study interior and textile design, earning a Bachelor of Arts or a Master of Arts degree. At universities of applied sciences, students can complete a Bachelor of Culture and Arts degree. In the fashion industry, it is also possible to obtain a Master’s degree in fashion and clothing.
