The profession emphasises the instructor's personal exercise skills or special competence in sports. Sports instruction requires comprehensive knowledge of the physical and mental development of people.

A Bachelor of Sports Studies needs social skills when working with different groups of people. The special needs of all customer groups and individuals must be taken into account. The profession requires the ability to motivate and inspire people to exercise. Organisational skills are needed when creating networks and opportunities for the recreational needs of different population and age groups.

Entrepreneurs are also required to have knowledge of business operations.

At universities of applied sciences, you can complete a Bachelor of Sports Studies degree. 

In upper secondary vocational institutions, you can complete the Initial Vocational Qualification in Sports Studies. The title of the qualification is sports assistant.  You can also complete a vocational upper secondary qualification through an apprenticeship. 

Competence-based qualifications may also include the Further Vocational Qualification in Sports and Coaching and the Specialist Vocational Qualification in Coaching.
