As a lawyer, you are required to have extensive knowledge of the legislation and the legal system. You must continuously monitor the development and changes in legislation. You need to have the ability to make independent decisions, and you must be able to justify the decisions based on legislation, precedents, instructions, and so on. You need to have the ability to master extensive topics, as well as have good oral and written presentation skills.

If you work in companies, it is essential to know business law and the legislation applicable to the company's sector. Practical experience in different sectors is beneficial. For example, if you work in organisations, the focus will be on training and advisory tasks, which also requires pedagogical competence. The competence requirements of a lawyer working in public administration focus on, for example, knowledge of public law, administrative procedure and municipal law.

You are required to have good interaction and negotiation skills. You must be able to listen to the views, problems and wishes of the various parties and to credibly justify your position. The work also requires precision, punctuality and stress tolerance. Foreign language skills are a benefit.

You can study law and complete a Master of Laws degree at universities. If you hold a Master of Laws degree, you can be qualified as a Master of Laws with court training by completing a one-year auscultation, i.e. court training. Postgraduate degrees in law include Licentiate of Laws and Doctor of Laws.
