A master pattern maker handles the pattern making of textile products in combination with production activities. They are familiar with the different sectors of pattern making and are able to assess their technical and financial prerequisites for production. The production of a pattern collection requires a good eye for design, three-dimensional perception, co-operation skills and independent decision-making skills.

A master pattern maker must be familiar with the production process of clothing, leather, fur or shoe products and master their pattern making and measuring tasks. You must understand the production methods and serial production requirements of the factory and know how to schedule production.

The production of a pattern collection requires creativity and a sense of design. You must know how to use ICT applications of the clothing sector. You must be able to make independent decisions. You need co-operation and work management skills in the work.

Language proficiency is an advantage in the profession, as production often also takes place abroad.

At a university of applied sciences, you can complete a Bachelor of Culture and Arts degree in the field of clothing.  You can also study design specialising in the clothing industry there. The qualification title is Bachelor of Culture and Arts, Designer.

In vocational institutions in upper secondary education and training, you can complete a Vocational Qualification in Textiles and Fashion Industry. When you have accumulated competence, you can complete a Further Qualification in Textiles and Fashion Industry and a specialist vocational qualification (master pattern maker). The qualification can also be completed through an apprenticeship.

Salary is usually hourly or monthly pay. Possible bonuses will also be paid. The Finnish Textile and Fashion negotiates generally applicable collective agreements in the sector, which companies in the sector must comply with.
