A tailor prepares more complex garments made to measure for men and women such as men's suits, outerwear and evening dresses. They use traditional working methods, and the share of crafts is high. They usually work as entrepreneurs or at a tailor shop. The profession requires excellent manual skills and customer service competence.

The profession requires competence in different sewing techniques. You should also master other work stages such as pattern design, cutting, material selection and fitting. You must be familiar with different fabric types and their properties and suitability for making various clothes.

The work requires dexterity and some degree of intrinsic imagination and assessment ability of what the designed garment will look like on the customer. Creativity, accuracy and diligence as well as knowledge of colours and shapes, styles and trends are a prerequisite for practising the profession. In addition, you should be able to use IT software for pattern making and clothing manufacturing. The profession requires customer service skills.

The profession may not be suitable for people with dust allergy.

You can qualify as a tailor by completing the Vocational Qualification in Textiles and Fashion Industry (tailor, custom tailor) in upper secondary vocational education and training. When you have accumulated competence, you can complete a Further Qualification in Textiles and Fashion Industry and a specialist vocational qualification. The qualification can also be completed through apprenticeship training.
