A weaver creates fabrics in industry using weaving machines or by hand. They monitor the operation of weaving machines and the quality of the fabric. Most commonly, weavers work in the textile mill of a textile manufacturing factory. You need to have knowledge of materials, accuracy and manual skills.

You must know the different textile materials well. In industrial weaving, it is important that you master the operation of weaving machines. You need to be accurate and quick to detect and correct errors. Manual weaving requires mastering the techniques and working methods of weaving, including preparatory work, structural fabric design and product finishing. The job description may also include dyeing and printing of fabrics.

The design and manufacture of fabrics is also carried out with computers, so you may need IT skills in the profession. As an entrepreneur, you must be able to assess the quality of fabrics, and to price and market your products.

You need excellent vision. You also need dexterity and great care when tying broken wefts, warps and fabrics.

In vocational institutions in upper secondary education and training, you can complete a Vocational Qualification in Textiles and Fashion Industry or a Vocational Qualification in Arts and Design (weaving). You can also complete a Further Vocational Qualification in Textiles and Fashion Industry and a Specialist Vocational Qualification as competence-based qualifications. You can also complete qualifications through an apprenticeship.
