The tasks of an ICT support technician require good technical competence, a service mindset and cooperation skills. The profession requires knowledge of hardware, software and telecommunications networks. Having initiative and being able to work independently are necessary. The work also requires flexibility, the ability to focus on several things at the same time and quick problem-solving skills.

The work requires clear oral and written expression and the ability to teach new things to IT users. Customer service skills are particularly important in service production companies for which support services have been outsourced.

English skills are needed to use manuals and user instructions and to acquire new information. The rapid development of information technology offers constant challenges and requires constant learning.

The educational backgrounds of ICT support persons vary. Vocational upper secondary education and training institutions offer vocational upper secondary qualifications in information and communications technology. Vocational upper secondary vocational institutions may also offer vocational upper secondary qualifications in information and communications technology (ICT installation technician, electronics installation technician, well-being technology installation technician). 

After gaining more competence, you can also complete a further qualification in information and communication technology, a further qualification in information and telecommunication technology, a specialist vocational qualification in information and communication technology, and a specialist vocational qualification in information and telecommunication technology. You can also complete the qualification through an apprenticeship. 

At universities of applied sciences, you can complete a bachelor of engineering (technology) degree. At universities of applied sciences, you can also complete a bachelor of business administration degree in data processing.
