Stewardesses and stewards are required to have a service-oriented attitude, customer service skills and language skills. In particular, English language skills are necessary in the profession. The job requires a positive attitude, sociability and a situational awareness. The ability to get along with different people is important.

Stewardesses and stewards must have mastered safety procedures in case of various emergencies. Cabin crew must have adequate first aid skills and it is their job to ensure that passengers comply with safety rules. The job requires knowledge of serving and selling food and beverages.

The profession also requires flexibility, organisation and problem-solving skills. Surprising and urgent situations require adaptability and resilience. Cabin crew are required to be both self-motivated and team players, as they work together with the rest of the aircraft crew.

The profession requires adaptation to irregular shift work. The time difference on long flights also puts a strain on the body, so the job requires good physical and mental fitness. The job involves physically demanding, standing work where the working positions can sometimes be awkward.

Airlines organise training for cabin crew according to their recruitment needs. After a certain amount of work experience, a stewardess or steward can apply for a purser course, which will prepare them for cabin supervisor tasks.

The application criteria are defined for each recruitment. The criteria for cabin crew are based on regulatory requirements and customer service conditions. Aviation authorities and regulations regulate the content of basic training. Language requirements vary from airline to airline.

Typical requirements are a minimum of an upper secondary school leaving certificate or diploma of secondary education, swimming ability of at least 50 meters, customer service experience, age at least 18 years, height at least 160 cm, good health and good eyesight and hearing.
