Teaching assistants must have good interaction skills, as they work in close contact with pupils, teachers and other school staff. Teaching assistants must be able to communicate clearly and sensitively, and be able to support the individual needs of pupils. The work requires good perception and the ability to assess situations.
Patience and empathy are important qualities, as the assistant often works with students who may have learning difficulties, behavioural challenges or other support needs. The assistant must be able to support pupils according to their own needs, whether to provide guidance in the use of learning materials, assist them with tasks or develop their social skills.
In addition, organising skills and flexibility are essential, as the teaching assistant’s working day might include a wide range of tasks that require the ability to respond quickly and adapt to changing situations. The ability to cooperate is also important, as close cooperation with teachers and other school professionals is emphasised in the assistant’s work.
The assistant must also be reliable and able to act independently, as they play a responsible role in the everyday school attendance of pupils. Knowledge in special education, learning difficulties and support for the growth and development of pupils is useful and often necessary to succeed at work.
