The profession requires adaptation to irregular shift work. The time difference on long flights also puts a strain on the body, so the job requires good physical and mental fitness. The job involves physically demanding, standing work where the working positions can sometimes be awkward.

Airlines organise training for cabin crew according to their recruitment needs. After a certain amount of work experience, a stewardess or steward can apply for a purser course, which will prepare them for cabin supervisor tasks.
